Weeks = 9, Adventures = 8 | Mr. Lee’s

Happy Monday!

Sorry for the delay in updating you all on my adventures… all 3 of you that are following along!  But work and life have been chaotic, and I haven’t taken the time to sit down and write.  As I have confessed before, I am not a big writer and would rather be doing than writing.  Which is why I am behind and now have 3 blogs to write. :/  So I am leveraging some down time on my flight to my next adventure to catch up and renew my commitment to my year-long quest.  I know me, if I don’t catch up now, my delay will extent and extend and extend to the point of no writing return which will then become of the point of no-adventure return.  Time to get back at it!

While I haven’t been writing, I have been adventuring, several intentional, one unintentional.  More on the unintentional in a future post…

But today, I am going to share my foray to Mr. Lee’s, a speakeasy in Germantown, for those of you who don’t know, Germantown is an upcoming hipster neighborhood in Louisville.  Though I would wager you already knew the neighborhood was hipster-ish based on the fact that I went to a speakeasy … you all are a pretty bright group!

On a dreary and rainy Friday after a particularly stressful work week, my friend Claire and I headed to Mr. Lee’s for a fancy 1920’s cocktail and some moody ambiance.  The dark, quiet bar was a perfect way to end and decompress after a long Friday at work.

In true speakeasy fashion, there was minimal signage out in front of the bar which would have made it hard to find if not for the help of our dear friend Google, who thankfully provided a screen cap of the front of the building making the search for this speakeasy much simpler.  A huge perk on a cold, dark, blustery October night.

(In case you decide to go, here is a picture of the front of the building!)

Inside, the bar was dark and warm, the atmosphere quiet, and the bartender in full costume – slicked backed hair and suspenders, a very fun setting and a look I gotta say that I love on gentlemen.  Perhaps I was born in the wrong era?  Maybe I need to head back to the 20’s with lots of dresses, pin-roll curls, and suspenders…

The drink list was small with a heavy focus on bourbon and other “older” liquors.  Though bourbon is not really an old liquor, at least not in Kentucky – it is always front and center and ever popular.  To order your drinks, you had to pull little string on the wall that illuminated a small light, that alerted the bartender.  This was probably my favorite part of the experience.  The most old-timey component.

For my cocktail, I opted for an Old Fashioned, a good and classic choice, and Mr. Lee’s did not let me down.  My Old Fashion delicious – nice and smooth, and went down easy, perhaps too easy… The prices at Mr. Lee’s, in my opinion, were on par with other well made, quality bourbon cocktails.  My Old Fashioned was $10, and the drink Claire ordered (I cannot recall the name) was around $8.

Claire and I enjoyed our journey back in time – it was a great evening, with excellent company and delicious drinks.  If you are looking for a quiet place to have a well-made cocktail and some conversation, I would recommend trying Mr. Lee’s.  If you want company, let me know, I am ready to head back! 😉
